Concussion Protocol Summary for Semper Fi Athletics
What is a Concussion? A concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. It can occur with or without loss of consciousness and can have serious short- and long-term effects.
Signs & Symptoms Parents/Athletes Should Watch For (immediately and in the days after)
Headache or pressure in head
Nausea/vomiting
Balance problems or dizziness
Blurred/double vision
Sensitivity to light or noise
Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy
Confusion, concentration/memory problems
Mood changes (irritability, sadness, nervousness)
Sleep changes (drowsy or trouble falling asleep)
Immediate Action if Concussion is Suspected
Remove the athlete from play/practice immediately — no exceptions.
Do NOT allow return the same day.
Notify coach/staff right away (even during games/tournaments).
Parent/guardian must be informed and take the athlete to a qualified healthcare provider (preferably one trained in concussion management) for evaluation.
Return-to-Play Protocol (Mandatory 6-Step Process) Athletes must be symptom-free and follow a gradual, medically supervised return-to-play progression (per CDC and Colorado law): Step 1: Symptom-limited activity (no sports) Step 2: Light aerobic exercise (stationary bike/walking) Step 3: Sport-specific exercise (running drills, no contact) Step 4: Non-contact training drills Step 5: Full-contact practice (only after medical clearance) Step 6: Return to game play Each step must be separated by at least 24 hours with no symptom return.
Parent/Guardian Responsibility
Monitor your athlete for signs/symptoms at home after any head impact.
Report any suspected concussion to SFA staff immediately.
Ensure your child completes full medical clearance and return-to-play steps before resuming any Activities.
SFA Policy
No athlete will return to play the same day a concussion is suspected.
We follow CDC Heads Up guidelines and Colorado concussion law.
All coaches/volunteers are trained in concussion recognition and removal.
